Questions that are in the Shows Boxes

A. Do you think water meters are a good way of charging for water?
B. What are your three main policies for this by-election?
C. Shaping a healthy and happy city, what are your suggestions for sustainable strategies to prevent youth crime in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton)?
D. In the recent Future for Local Government Report, it suggested local amalgamations as a middle ground option between localised and centralised service provision.
Do you agree with more centralisation of local government?
E. I support intellectually disabled folks in Hamilton, many of whom are dependent on cycling. If you win this election, will you support continued safe connected cycleways for my clients?
F. For roads that carry more than 6,000 daily traffic movements, Waka Kotahi recommended having a separated cycle lane on the carriageway.
If you had to vote for having a separated cycleway or free parking for parked cars, how would you vote and why?
G. What is the most pressing issue in the Hamilton East Ward of Hamilton City Council?
H. Hamilton City Council has two Maori Ward Councillors.
Will you advocate for Maori Wards to stay or be removed?
I. There are some suburbs in Hamilton East with safer speed limits of 40kph.
If you were given the option to change them, will you keep them as is, raise them or lower them and why?
J. What areas of council expenditure would you prioritise?
K. What is your view on future rates increases?
L. Will you support council lobbying the Government for an urgent review of the earthquake-prone legislation?
M. How will you improve the transparency and communication of council activities and decision-making?
N. How will you ensure that feedback from public consultation is properly weighted in Council decisions?
O. Why should I vote for you?
P. What is your biggest priority for this term, and how do you intend on delivering on it?
Q. Are you a member of any political party?
If so, has your campaign received any support from that party?
R. I cycle every day in Hamilton.
What will you do to support me as I help to reduce congestion and climate change impacts?
S. Should councils be forced by the Ministry of Health to fluoridate their water supplies?
T. Do you think that social housing should be first offered to those who are locals?
U. Councils are being given roles and responsibilities from Central Government coming from regulation and legislation. These are referred to as unfunded mandates.
What is your opinion on unfunded mandates from Central Government?
V. What are you personally doing to role-model climate action?
W. If elected, what is one personal strength you will bring to Council?
X. Do you think that council should suspend non-critical projects to fund critical projects such as upgrading water infrastructure?
Y. If you do not become a councillor, what is your dream job?
Z. What is a quality that you admire in one of your fellow candidates?
AA. Successful organisations have continuous improvement programmes.
What improvements do you think Hamilton City Council needs to make?
AB. Changes to central government legislation impact on local communities. Councils are expected to deliver the outcomes of legislation without funding or resources.
As an example, government ministries and departments increasingly communicate with citizens via email and text.
The ‘non-computer literate’ visit libraries for assistance in tax and benefit matters. This assistance is funded by ratepayers.
Do you believe that central government should form partnerships with Councils to deliver central government services?
If so, how should these partnerships be funded?

Hard-hitting Questions

  1. Do you support the Grey/Beale Street Intersection upgrades?
  2. Hamilton City Council staff reported to the Finance Committee that from 23 August 2022 to 31 October 2023, debt increased from $273million to $866million.
How will you address the significant overspending by this council?
Are you prepared to be a minority voice around the council table when the majority of councilors in this term seek to continue spending on projects that many ratepayers do not want? – Disclaimer – Hamilton City Council has made contact with to advise us that the $273 million figure was actually $723 million.
  3. Many of our urban bus stops are not easily accessible to wheelchair users who often need to travel up to 5 bus stops down the route to catch a bus.
What is your position on making all Hamilton East urban bus stops fully accessible for the disabled members of our community?
